Telecom sector accounts for about 2 per cent GDP during 2013-14, says DoT
According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), revenue generated by the telecom sector during 2013-14 stood at Rs 2,193.5 billion, accounting for 1.93 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This was 5.71 per cent higher than Rs 2,074.9 billion (2.07 per cent of GDP) generated by the telecom sector in 2012-13. Further, during 2011-12, the revenue generated by the telecom sector stood at Rs 1,859.3 billion, contributing 2.1 per cent to the country’s GDP.
Meanwhile, the government has also stated that it has formulated a comprehensive action plan which aims to address the issues in the telecom sector. These issues are broadly related to policy strategies, broadband strategy, telecom infrastructure development, licensing and regulatory issues, management of spectrum and strategy for revival of public sector undertakings.
